Harbour Island is three and a half miles long and half a mile wide. Locals call it Briland. There are almost no cars, the whole island moves by golf cart, and the Atlantic side has three miles of sand that genuinely does run pink in the right light.
That scale is the reason it works for weddings and also the reason it needs planning. Your guests will all be within ten minutes of each other. You will not be sharing the beach with a cruise ship. But there are only so many rooms on the island, and the logistics of getting everyone here involve a flight, a taxi and a boat.

How you and your guests actually get here
There is no airport on Harbour Island. Every guest arrives the same way, and it is worth putting this on your wedding website in exactly these words because it confuses people.
Fly to North Eleuthera
North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) is roughly 20 minutes from Nassau on Bahamasair or Western Air, with some direct services from US cities. Not Governor's Harbour — that is a different airport, an hour further south.
Taxi to Three Island Dock
A short ride from the terminal. Taxis meet the flights, but a wedding party of any size should be pre-booked rather than left to chance.
Water taxi to Dunmore Town
About five minutes across. Frequent during the day, thinner in the evening. This is the step that dictates your ceremony time, not the other way round.
Golf cart from the dock
Carts are the island's transport and everything is minutes away. Reserve them in advance for a wedding party; supply is genuinely limited in peak season.

Pink Sands Beach, and the hotels around it
Harbour Island's hotels are small, design-led and expensive for their size. Several of them are among the most photographed properties in the Caribbean, which is a large part of why couples come here.

The Atlantic side, and the most requested ceremony location on the island. Blush-pink sand, wide open, rarely crowded. The pink reads strongest in early morning and the hour before sunset, so timing is set around the light.

Choosing between them
Six questions to ask any Harbour Island venue
The hotels here are small and their wedding policies differ more than their websites suggest. Ask these before you put down a deposit — or send me the property name and I'll ask for you.
- Do you host ceremonies for non-guests? Several Harbour Island properties only marry couples staying with them, and a few won't host weddings at all. This single answer eliminates most of your shortlist.
- What is the facility fee, and what does it include? It applies everywhere here. Get the number in writing, and find out whether chairs, setup and a sound system are inside it or billed separately.
- What is your maximum, seated and standing? These are boutique properties. A lawn that looks endless in photographs may seat thirty.
- What is the wet-weather alternative, and can we see it? If the answer is vague, treat that as the answer. A covered option you haven't seen isn't a plan.
- Is there a minimum room block or food and beverage spend? Common on Harbour Island and often the largest hidden cost in the whole wedding.
- Which hours are we allowed music, and until when? Dunmore Town is residential and compact. Noise curfews here are real and earlier than couples expect.
On-island practicalities
What Briland has, and what travels in
Three and a half miles of island means a small supplier pool. None of this is a problem if it's planned for, and all of it is a problem if it isn't.
Photography
There are photographers based on Harbour Island and more who travel from Nassau or Eleuthera. Peak-season Saturdays go early. If a specific photographer matters to you, book them before the venue.
Flowers
Most floristry for Out Island weddings is built around what can be sourced and transported reliably. Tell me the look you want and I'll tell you what's achievable here versus what needs to come in.
Music
Local musicians are available, and a Bahamian element suits Briland better than a generic playlist. Factor in Dunmore Town's noise curfews when planning a reception.
Hair, makeup and cake
Available, limited, and booked quickly in peak season. These are the suppliers couples leave latest and then struggle to find. Lock them in early.
The practical rule for Harbour Island: anything you care about specifically should be booked before the things you're flexible about. On a bigger island you can substitute. Here you often can't.

The legal side
Licence, certificate and apostille
The legal requirements are the same across The Bahamas. What differs on Harbour Island is where the paperwork happens and how that fits an island itinerary.
- 24-hour residency. You must be physically in The Bahamas for a day before you can apply for the licence. Arrival day counts, ceremony day does not.
- Apply locally, on a weekday. You can apply on any major island — here that means the local Administrator's Office rather than a trip to Nassau. Offices run Monday to Friday, so a Saturday arrival for a Monday wedding does not work, whatever the flights say.
- Documents. Valid passports, proof of arrival, and original divorce decree or death certificate if either of you has been married before. Requirements vary by nationality — see the full checklist.
- Witnesses. Two are required. I arrange them if you are eloping alone — see witness requirements.
- Certificate. Registered with the Bahamian government after the ceremony. Certified copies available.
- Apostille. The Bahamas is a Hague Convention signatory, so the certificate can be apostilled and shipped to you internationally. Some authorities require it, some do not — see apostille versus legalization.
Where the licence is issued. Good news for a Harbour Island wedding: you do not have to fly to Nassau for the paperwork. The marriage licence can be applied for on any of the major islands — at the Registrar General's Department in Nassau, or at the local Administrator's Office here in the Family Islands. What does not change is the rest of it: both of you attend in person, you must have been in the country 24 hours first, and offices run Monday to Friday. A Saturday arrival for a Monday wedding still will not work. I handle the application with you either way. Briland's seasons behave differently from Nassau's. The Atlantic side catches wind the harbour side doesn't, and the island empties out in a way Nassau never does.

What couples ask me right before booking
Harbour Island has a few hundred rooms and three travel steps to reach it. These are the questions that come in the last message before someone books flights.
“Can our guests really get there and back in a day?”
From Nassau, yes. From the US mainland it's tight and I'd advise against it — a flight, a taxi and a water taxi each way leaves no margin, and the evening crossings thin out. Most guests stay at least one night.
“What if the hotel won't host the ceremony?”
Send me the property name before you pay a deposit. Some Harbour Island hotels host ceremonies for guests only, some charge a facility fee that surprises people, and some won't host at all. I'll tell you which yours is in a message.
“What happens if the weather turns?”
Pink Sands is on the Atlantic side and gets wind the harbour side doesn't. Every ceremony I plan here has a sheltered alternative identified in advance — often Dunmore Town harbour-side, which photographs beautifully and isn't a compromise.
“Do we need to book golf carts in advance?”
For a wedding party, yes. Carts are the island's transport and supply genuinely runs out in peak season. It's not something to sort out on arrival day with guests waiting at the dock.
“Why won't you just publish a price?”
Because a Harbour Island number that ignored your venue would be wrong. I travel to the island, the hotels here set their own facility fees, and the gap between a two-person beach ceremony and a fifty-guest hotel lawn is large. “Can you do it if our date is three weeks away?”
