The resort will coordinate your reception beautifully. It cannot sign your marriage register. That is the gap I fill, and it is the one most couples find out about late.

Why Paradise Island is its own planning problem

Paradise Island looks like the easiest place in the world to get married, and in most ways it is. The complications are specific and they are not the ones couples brace for.

The licence is on the other island. There is no registry counter on Paradise Island. The Registrar General's Department is in Nassau, across the bridge, open weekdays only and closed on Bahamian public holidays. If you arrive Friday afternoon intending to marry Saturday, the 24 hour rule and the office hours collide, and no amount of planning fixes it on the day. That single fact reshapes more Paradise Island timelines than anything else.

The bridges are a real pinch point. Two bridges connect Nassau to Paradise Island, with a toll charged in the Nassau to Paradise Island direction. At the wrong hour, or when a cruise ship day coincides with your licence run, a ten minute drive is not a ten minute drive. I build buffer into that leg rather than hoping.

A resort wedding coordinator is not a marriage officer. This is the one that surprises people most. Resort teams on Paradise Island are genuinely excellent at what they do: venues, catering, florals, timing, staff. What they cannot do is solemnise your marriage, because under Bahamian law only a Licensed Bahamas Marriage Officer, a Registrar, a Magistrate or a Family Island Administrator may do that. So a resort wedding still requires someone like me, and the question is only whether that person is a stranger who arrives for twenty minutes or the person who has been planning with you from the start.

The legal requirements, in order

1. On arrival Both of you land and keep your immigration card

   The 24 hour residency clock starts when you arrive, and the immigration card is how you prove it. Both of you must have been in the country for those 24 hours, not just one. Do not lose the card, because it is the only proof the Registrar accepts.

2. After 24 hours Apply for the licence in Nassau

   Both of you attend in person with valid passports. The fee is BS$100 at the Registrar General's Department. The office runs Monday to Friday, roughly 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and is closed weekends and Bahamian public holidays.

   Weekend arrivals are the most common timeline mistake. Land Thursday for a Saturday wedding and everything is comfortable. Land Friday and it is not.
3. At the same time Swear the single status affidavit

   If you have never been married, a declaration of single status is sworn here in The Bahamas rather than brought from home. I provide it and handle the swearing, which removes a step people often waste a week on before they travel.

4. If previously married Bring the proof with you

   A divorce absolute or a death certificate for a late spouse, as the original or a certified copy. This is the one document that genuinely has to travel with you, so pack it rather than planning to request it from abroad.

5. Ceremony day Two witnesses sign

   Two people aged 18 or over must witness and sign. If you are eloping with nobody else present, I provide them. Nobody has ever had to postpone a Paradise Island wedding over witnesses.

6. After Registration and your certificate

   I register the marriage and arrange your certified certificate. If a government outside The Bahamas will need to accept it, that is where an apostille comes in, at $120 per document from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it can all be done after you have flown home.

Where people actually marry on Paradise Island

Two properties account for most Paradise Island weddings, and they are very different propositions. Beyond them there are private villas and public beach ceremonies, which have their own rules about permits and access.

Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis publishes more than twenty ceremony and reception spaces, which is both its strength and the reason couples find it overwhelming. These are the named venues and the guest numbers Atlantis states for each, which is the fastest way to narrow a shortlist before you talk to anybody.

My honest read: the small venues are the underrated ones. Stingray Falls at ten guests and The Cove Point at twenty five produce better photographs and a far calmer morning than a two hundred guest beach set up, and they cost a fraction. If your guest list is genuinely small, do not let the scale of Atlantis talk you into a space you have to fill.

The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort

On One Ocean Drive, at the quieter eastern end of the island, with thirty five acres of Versailles-inspired gardens laid out in terraces. It is a completely different register from Atlantis: smaller, older, and formal in a way that suits couples who want the photographs to look like a European estate rather than a Caribbean resort. The Versailles Gardens are the signature ceremony setting.

Beaches and villas

Cabbage Beach and Paradise Beach are the long public stretches on the north shore, and a beach ceremony there is legal and lovely, but it is public: access points, sunbathers and jet ski noise are all part of the deal, and the quiet pockets are the ones you only know from working there. Private villas trade that for complete schedule control, at the cost of arranging every vendor yourself unless someone is coordinating.

Timing: sunset, season and the hour you choose

Ceremony time on Paradise Island is a photography decision disguised as a logistics decision. Sunset in Nassau runs from roughly 5:22 PM in December to roughly 8:01 PM in June, and the good light is the forty minutes before it. A 4:00 PM ceremony in June is harsh overhead sun; the same 4:00 PM in December is close to perfect.

On season: hurricane season officially runs 1 June to 30 November, but the activity is not evenly spread, and roughly 96% of major activity falls in August, September and October. June and November are statistically far calmer than the headline dates suggest, and they are priced accordingly. What a Paradise Island wedding costs

There are two separate bills and conflating them is where budgets go wrong. The government fees are fixed and small. The wedding itself is whatever you choose it to be.

Questions couples ask just before booking

• We have already booked Atlantis. Do we still need you?

  For the legal ceremony, yes, because a resort coordinator cannot solemnise a marriage in The Bahamas. For the planning, that is your call. Plenty of couples use their resort team for the reception and me purely as the Marriage Officer, and that is a perfectly sensible arrangement. I will tell you honestly which parts you do not need me for.

• Our flights are already booked. Can you tell us if the date still works?

  Send me your arrival date and time and your intended ceremony date. In two minutes I can tell you whether the 24 hour rule and the Registrar's weekday hours line up. If they do not, there are usually two or three workable fixes, and it is much better to hear them now than at the counter.

• How quickly can this be done if we are on a tight trip?

  The floor is set by law, not by me: 24 hours in the country before you can apply, then a weekday licence application. A Wednesday arrival can comfortably produce a Friday wedding. Same week weddings are routine, and same week Bahamas weddings explains exactly how tight it can go.

• What is actually included, and what will we be billed for later?

  I quote the full figure, including the government fees, before you commit. Government charges are fixed and I pass them through at cost. What I cannot quote is the resort's own venue, catering and setup charges, because those are set by the property and vary enormously between a ten guest garden and a two hundred guest beach. Ask the resort for their figure in writing, then I can tell you whether it is reasonable for what you are getting.

• We are only two people. Is a planner overkill?

  For a genuine elopement, often yes, and I will say so. What you still need is a Marriage Officer and two witnesses, both of which I provide. Bahamas elopement packages is the right starting point if that is you, and it is considerably cheaper than a planned wedding.

• What happens if it rains on the day?

  Paradise Island rain is usually brief and passes. The real answer is that the backup gets decided weeks ahead, not on the morning: a named indoor or covered alternative, a hold time, and one person authorised to make the call. • Will you be the one who actually turns up?

  Yes. I perform the ceremony myself, and the person you have been messaging is the person who signs your register. That is the whole point of this arrangement, and it is the single most common reason couples tell me they chose it.
